There’s such an enormous wealth of Lee Perry music and productions, that now there’s even a blog dedicated exclusively to nothing but the music and productions of Lee Perry. It’s aptly titled I am The Upsetter. Scratch it!

Schlump Vibration does it again

Apart from a guest tape that was posted some months ago, Schlump Vibration‘s latest mixtape dates from way back in march 2009. So we got a little worried about when the next one would be posted. Yesterday our (im)patience was finally rewarded with Mixtape #14 and we can safely say it was worth the waiting.

#14 is titled Music like dirt and it’s a killer, once again. The music ranges from Prince Buster to Disrupt and all in all Schlump gives us 80 minutes of wonderfull tunes. Check the playlist for yourself, then download it and – of course – play in full. Wicked!

Dr. Auratheft says goodbye

Sad news for those of us that have been listening to the many wonderfull compilations and mixes made by Dr. Auratheft. In his last post he announces the closing down of his (-) blog. Sad news indeed, as (-) has grown over the years into a real stronghold for musical adventurers.

(-) was always entertaining with never ever a dull moment. But the mixes were more than just that, with the music wetting the appetite for new territories and offering a broader view of global culture. Making it sometimes not only a real pleasure for the ears, but also giving us food for thought. I for one will be missing all of this for sure.

It’s always a pity when a blog as unique as this one just disappears, leaving us with another black hole in cyberspace. But on the other hand we were fortunate enough to download some of the (250!) compilations  that have been posted in the past five years. That still leaves us with hours and hours of of world wide funk and global soul jazz to enjoy.

For the occasion – and as a small tribute – we’re doing a repost of one of the mixtapes we enjoyed the most over the years. It’s the Doaba Gypsies mix that combines some exciting music with an interesting view on post-European dialogue. Enjoy the mix and wishing all the best for the futur of Dr. Auratheft.

Musik Line

Musik Line is a brand new online journal / blog dedicated to sound system culture and to African, Caribbean and other music. It features short articles, interviews, mixes, reviews and other interesting sonic and literary fragments.

The first issue is now online and features range from Gnawa Music and the Black Diaspora in Morocco to a snapshot of the hip hop scene in Mauritania in 2005. This is truely fascinating stuff.

OneSoundUK

We’ve been spotting a little spate of blogging activity recently geared up toward the reggae and dub massive. And it’s about time too. One of the newer but already interesting blogs is OneSoundUK, a joint effort of 3 dj’s with a love of drums, bass & riddim.

Their latest mix, Flames of the Dragon, is subtitled “old vs new school reggae” and runs the full spectrum of Jamaican (and Jamaican influenced) music from the 50’s to present days. But they might just as well focus on digital steppers or throw in some jungle or a dubstep mix with plenty of reggae influences.

Anyway, time to nice up the dance.

Cassette Dub Tapes

Retrofuturism. That’s the word that came to mind when we visited Schlump Vibration. The site gives us a nice trip into nostalgia (cassettes are truely old school). But the music on the tapes is just as well very 21st century. Mixtape #13 (the most recent one) has some Mungos Hifi, some High Tone, some Anthony B, some Eek A Mouse and ends with Tommy McCook’s “Persian Ska”. Brilliant!
