New bass from ShwoN

Dubstep, DnB , electro & Breakbeat producer ShwoN makes his blazin debut on High Chai Recordings with Ghengiz ShwoN. This 20 year old dj and producer from L.A. is currently on tour with a grip of like-minded young talent all spreading the gospel of bass heavy beats.

ShwoN’s fresh EP kicks off with the infectious drumstep jumper “Take Me Back” followed by the cheeky, dark comedy dubstep stylings of “Porkchop Sandwiches,” both sure to gain favor amongst bass djs. “Rage” closes out the EP with a cinematic zombie shuffle that would serve well as the background score to any of the Resident Evil video games.

Soundtrack to a nightly walk in the woods

This is definitely one for the “beyond” section. Sofamixes puts together a modern classical mix and calls it Soundtrack to a nightly walk in the woods. Guess this is why we like the woods so much. Eine kleine Nachtmusik for forest walkers (although we might just as well be tempted to try this one out on a starry night at the beach).

Step outside. It’s night, it’s dark, rather cold, and the woods are just around the corner. Walk. What’s that sound? Listen.

Mil i Maria

While writing our post on SubMachena, we also took a look at the other acts on their Blancomusic label. So it was a bit by coincidence that we stumbled upon this band. They’re called Mil i Maria and we don’t know a whole lot about them. Only that we fell in love with tunes like the ones you can hear below.

SubMachena

Think bass-heavy electro-dance with dub effects, Caribbean basslines, dirty chunky dark and heavy beats, some two-step influences. Think of a traditional-style Jamaican dub feel mixed with an intense take on tomorrow’s bass music. Perhaps think of a Warp record buried in the ground and being digged up a few months later to be put into the hands of Lee Scratch Perry.

We’re talking SubMachena here, a collaboration between Robin Taylor-Firth and Rawle Bruce. Taylor-Firth is perhaps best known for his work with Nightmares On Wax and they both been working together previously as Olive (“You’re Not Alone” anyone?). You probably won’t have heard much of them, because till now they stayed pretty much under the radar. But if you know your dubs, you will surely want to hear SubMachena.

Have a listen and enjoy.

While you’re on the SubMachena trail, don’t forget to check out their label Blancomusic’s blog. Besides the music you’ll find some interesting reads about the music industry, the music business and simply music 2.0. Makes you think.

Have a read and enjoy.

New Burial “Street Halo”

Burial comes with a new release, his first solo effort since 2007. Street Halo is a three track EP, foreshadowing a full album that is to be released later this year. It’s Burial as we know him, but with some minor changes. The songs sound a bit less ambient and a little more radio friendly. Or even dancefloor friendly, something you wouldn’t have said about Burial in the past. But it’s not a bad evolution and Burial is still Burial. I praise myself lucky for that.

Perhaps the biggest change is hearable in the EP’s title track. Street Halo combines a pounding atmosphere with an enticing beat and spliced female vocals – making it a possible candidate for the dancefloor. NYC (track #2) has distorted beats that keep changing in tempo as the backbone of the track. It’s an abstract tune, melancholic and gloomy – with distant and distorted female vocals adding to the claustrophobic atmosphere. Third track Stolen Dog stays downtempo, but adds some soul to it. It also has a dusty piano line that stumbles along for most of the track and surprisingly brings some warmth to the music. It’s a brillant tune. All three tracks make us curious what the full album will bring. More Burial, that’s sure, but which Burial?

PJ Harvey meets Niney the Observer

Swelling keyboard, swampy vocals, scratchy guitars, jangly percussion, an echoing tambourine, some distant vocal samples and a lot of reverb. I’m sure you never wondered how PJ Harvey might sound when out on a dubby reggae trip. But you get the answer anyway and it actually sounds good.

Written on the forehead is the first single taken from PJ Harvey’s new album Let England Shake. It was recorded inside a church in Dorset, England with assistance from producer Flood and musicians Mick Harvey and John Parish.

For those of you who might not immediately recognise the sample that fills the background, here it is in full. Niney the Observer’s classic “Blood and Fire”.
